Tackling a Plastering Job

Knowing how to plaster is an extremely useful skill to have. There are many times when you’ll need to repair walls and ceilings in and around the home and the best way to do this is by plastering. Whilst it might seem like plastering is a fairly simple thing to do, the truth is that if you’re not properly prepared then a simple plastering job can soon turn into a nightmare.

Tips for a Successful Plastering Job

When you to get started plastering it’s necessary to take certain things into consideration to ensure a successful job. You must plan carefully and decide how much work your going to tackle in a day, what equipment you’ll need and roughly how long the project will take to be completed. Below are some tips to ensure success –

  1. 1.     Choose your area carefully

When you first start out plastering it can be daunting if you start on a project where there isn’t much room for error. If you have a spare room in your house with a poor finish on the walls then it can be a good idea to start there. It gives you a chance to practice your skills without feeling like you’re under a lot of pressure. Once your confidence increases you can then move onto more important jobs.

  1. 2.     A good water supply is crucial

Not having a good water supply is where a lot of novice plasterers go wrong. Having a good supply of water is important for two vital reasons.

Firstly you must constantly clean your equipment as you go. This is because plaster sets very quickly and once it does it’s extremely difficult to remove. This can result in disaster and you having to replace all of your equipment.

The second reason that’s important to have a good supply of clean water is for the integrity of the plaster itself. When mixing plaster with water, it’s vital that the water is clean and not contaminated with any old bits of plaster. This will result in the plaster being streaky and uneven when applied (more information at http://www.lgplastering.co.uk).

  1. 3.     Allow adequate time

Allowing adequate time for a plastering job is vital. Whilst the work itself does progress fairly quickly once you get started on it, you need to account for the time needed for setting up and cleaning away. It’s always a good idea to give yourself at least a couple of hours to do the plastering work itself and then leave a good half hour before and after to set up and clean your equipment.

The amount of time needed to complete a project will of course depend on its size. It’s always better to tackle large projects in smaller steps rather than trying to get everything completed in one day.

  1. 4.     Plan carefully

It’s always important to plan ahead and think about how much you want to accomplish in a given period of time. By planning ahead you can allot a certain amount of time to a certain surface and ensure it’s done correctly rather than trying to get everything done at once. It’s advisable to leave larger walls until last so you don’t get overwhelmed.

Another crucial part of planning ahead is to make sure you have all the equipment you need before starting the job. Obviously you need enough plaster but also a good supply of water and any other equipment that will be necessary to get the job completed. Because you have to work quickly when plastering, you won’t be able to make a trip for extra equipment halfway through the job.
